The ArtsCatalyst (website), was founded in 1993 with the goal of commissioning and presenting science-informed art events in galleries, museums, and public spaces that involve artists, scientists, and the wider public in a discourse about the role and impact of science in society.
Arts Catalyst has supported public engagement with the investigation of air and space exploration, for example, with ‘zero gravity’ laboratories and the founding of ITACCUS, the International Astronautical Federation’s Technical Activities Committee on the Cultural Utilization of Space.
In January 2009, Arts Catalyst supported the launch of four new commissions in a traveling exhibition that celebrates the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth. The commissions, each in their own way, question the one-sided manipulation of non-human life forms for art by exploring the animal's point of view as a fundamental part of their work and practice.
Arts Catalyst does not simply expose artists to scientific ideas and practices with the goal of stimulating a response, but actually commissions projects that seek to do so.
